“Selenium Supplementation Is On Its Way Out”
Tens of millions of Americans take dietary supplements on a daily basis and the industry is approaching a $27 billion annual income, but the craze is dying down rapidly. And, the more of the supplements we scientifically test, the more we find that most are neither effective nor safe. Selenium is a trace element and only small amounts are needed in our diet. Since it functions as an antioxidant, it was pushed by strong marketing forces, along with other dangerous and ineffective antioxidants. We repeatedly find that a balanced nutritious diet containing fresh fruits and vegetables is, by far, our best way to maintain a healthful condition. Synthetic supplements do not have the same beneficial effects.
